Whoa whoa whoa!
Slow down a second, guys.
My guess regarding these numbers is — what an institution pledges and what it’s delivered. I mean, it’s a great thing that people were able to mobilize and donate 1.3 billion. That’s just tremendous, and those of you who donated did a great thing.
But: funds for that country are lagging. Housing is inadequate. Some women aren’t safe in those camps. No one is moving the rubble.
There is always context — for instance, we’ve spent a billion on emergency aid “and [are] now spending another $175 million on projects like cash-for-work programs, debris clearance, school construction and support for agriculture and police officers.”
What our numbers refer to is the ” … pending request before Congress for $1.6 billion in Haiti assistance.”
Also — here’s the website for the International Haiti Relief Commission.
I know I posted it ten minutes ago, but I should have put that in context. Sorry.
